The MLS?  It stands for the Multiple Listing Service and when we first started in real estate, it was not very techy!  In fact, it was a dot matrix printout that was picked up by each office from the Local Board of Realtors first thing in the morning.

At the front of the large bound book of white paper with black text (no photos), were the new additions from the day before.  The listings were not put into the system by the agents - they were entered into the MLS by the Board of Realtors.  It was the agents that filled out the MLS sheet with all of the criteria and with the data about the specific home, condo or town-home they wanted entered into the MLS by the Board.

Most of the time this MLS system fell short - due to the lapse between the paperwork being turned in with the agent's $19.00 fee for Data Entry, and the dynamic nature of the Real Estate market.

As an agent, you were hoping that the agent on the other side of the listing knew you and that you had successfully worked with them in the past.  That always made things go much easier.  In fact, if the agent was from your office and you have had positive dealings with said agent, that was an even bigger edge.

Today, the MLS systems are mostly combined.  You will find a few hold-outs when it comes to the sharing of their data - One such hold out is the Greater Antelope Valley Board of Realtors - Their Listing Data is not being shared with some of the Big conglomerations of MLS data - Such as So Cal MLS or CARETS.  If you are searching for the properties that are within Lancaster, Palmdale and the rest of the Antelope Valley - We have given our clients access to the GAVAR data Here.

When you are searching for listings that are for sale - chances are you are going to be using a local resource.  You might find some of the bigger Real estate engines populating with the data which you seek - but you will soon find out they are too much in the way of "selling your data".  You find out this quickly by all of the contacts from agents you receive with each singular inquiry about homes, condo's and town-homes you are interested in.
